The New GSX-R125 and GSX-S125 – worth the hype?
The newest additions to the GSX family are causing quite a stir. Along with finance deals, the new GSX-R125 and GSX-S125 were launched with a £200 incentive – up to £200 towards your CBT or Clothing when you purchased one new.
So other than pretty good offers, why else should you consider one?
There’s 2 clear markets for 125s, new riders and commuters, and Suzuki really have tackled both markets head on.
The GSX-R125 is capturing the imagination of the young, or at least those young at heart, with classic racing fairings and optional Moto GP colours. Which is particularly fitting as the GP Season has just started (Go Team Suzuki Ecstar!) The holy grail of power to weight ratio is what is getting most people pretty excited about the new 125s. With 14.8bhp, and weighing in at 134kg you really are getting the most out of the learner legal bike. Though don’t let the sport style fool you, the GSX-R125 leaves the young racer set sitting pretty with an impressive mpg just shy of 123, and a pretty forgiving clutch so this bike will not only go for miles it won’t having you looking daft by stalling (as much) at traffic lights. The angled clip-ons give the traditional, and let’s face it fun, sport riding position, but the 35-degree steering angle has reviewers across the board, and a few of us here, all commenting on how this handles surprisingly well. With keyless ignition, security has really been taken into consideration, too. The bike won’t start unless the fob is within a metre. Just make sure you don’t leave it on the wall by your bike as you have a brew then ride off (there is a pin override to cover this, but it won’t cover the bruise on your ego)
The GSX-S125, on the other hand, has a completely different look and feel. The naked street bike is a kilogram lighter with the same 14.8bhp and 122.8 mpg. The upright bars, naturally, give a more comfortable riding position; slightly more forgiving than the GSX-R125 and in our view more likely to be suited to slightly older riders who may already have their full licence and just need a commuter run about. The GSX-S125 also seems to lend itself slightly more to carrying luggage, another tip of the hat towards commuters. Also being available in the Moto GP colours, it surprisingly doesn’t look as bizarre as it sounds, given its lack of fairings. Another nifty feature is a plate that slides above the ignition, making it just a little bit trickier for someone to hotwire the bike with a screwdriver. How thoughtful.
So along with great value, you’re also getting a great bike. More like cousins than twins, the GSX-R125 and GSX-S125 bring a completely different riding experiences to the table. Being as powerful as they can be and still be CBT legal, they’re certainly going to satisfy the new rider a bit longer than traditional learner legal rides. Not only that, but we wager the full license commuter will be pretty happy with the power and handling, and may even lament that something this good wasn’t there for them when they passed.
