New Regulations Leaked – is your bike affected?
Due to a leak, an EU Directive has been prematurely announced stating that all motorised vehicles must be fitted with seatbelts – including bikes and trikes. Statistics show that injuries sustained when a rider is thrown from their bike, such as going over a car bonnet, are far worse than those sustained when a rider stays with their bike, such as a side or rear shunt. This has led bureaucrats to draft the proposal, leading to the latest safety measure.
A rise in moped crime has caused the directive to be pushed through Brussels and could be in force as early as April 31st 2019.
As it stands bikes fitted with a “sissy bar” are exempt, as they prevent a rider being pushed from the vehicle, meaning cruisers such as the Thunderbird are likely to rise in popularity.
It’s unknown whether the regulations will extend to the race track, but heightened rules in F1 is leading to suggestions that Valentino Rossi and Guy Martin will soon be strapped in, too
It's surely set to be a controversial move. What your thoughts?
