Andrew's First Impressions of the Medley 125
The cost of petrol is rising, every day it seems! A lot of us are turning to bikes and scooters as second “cars” to get us to work and back to save a few quid, and beat the traffic! Here’s what Andrew at Manchester store has to say about the Piaggio Medley 125!
"Medley 125 – First Ride
Big Wheeled scooters are all the rage over in Europe but haven’t taken off as well in the UK. With their larger 15 or 16-inch front wheels adding a lot more stability on the road and appearing to offer more practicality as well. Their main problem has been that they are usually not as stylish as other scooters on the market, something which is a big consideration when it comes to buying a 125cc machine.
Piaggio has recently launched the all-new Medley 125 as their newest addition to their big wheel line up so does it tick all the right boxes as a stylish commuter? Well on paper it sounds like it should – styling in the vein of the Beverley 350, 150mpg from a new I-Get engine with Start/Stop technology, ABS and 16 Inch front wheel as well as a choice of 4 different colours. On the road, the Medley has a real grown-up feel to it, pushing the starter button is a rather non-eventful affair – the new brushless starter motor which was designed to work alongside the Start/Stop system fires up the 125cc motor with virtually no noise whatsoever and a big change from what you would expect from other scooters in Piaggio’s range. Initial getaway is again a refined process; the medley gets up to speed quickly and effortlessly and feels quicker than its capacity suggests.
Around Manchester, the Medley is a great companion, offering room under the seat for 2 full face helmets or a good shopping haul, a comfy riding position, useable mirrors and more than enough power to zip in and out of the rush hour traffic. The larger front wheel means potholes and road imperfections are handled with ease and highlights why these ‘big wheel’ scooters are so popular abroad – very confidence inspiring and gives the Medley a feeling of a much bigger bike. It’s not all about inner-city riding though and out of the centre and onto a dual carriageway the Medley handled 40-50 mph roads with ease and the optional Fly Screen fitted to our demonstrator helped protect from elements.
Overall I think Piaggio have done a great job with the Medley – it’s different enough to go alongside their own Liberty model and has some great new features that I hope will make their way down to the other scooters in the range. At £3199 the Medley does fall into the higher price category for a 125 Scooter but with ABS as standard, the Start-Stop technology offering 150 Mpg, excellent build quality and the feel of a much bigger bike it easily justifies the price and with Piaggio offering 0% finance you can be riding one for less than you might think!"
